untitled film stills

I think if I could sit at a round table, sip on wine and talk post modern art with any photographer it would be Cindy Sherman. people ask why she constantly did these odd projects to make this archive of photos, she usually comes back with a simple reply - "Because, I like it". It is an empowering thing for a woman to create something for sheer self-pleasure and get such a positive response from both men and women in society. in other words shes a badass. When you look at each one of these pictures you can completely form a completely plausible story for each one.

"Cindy Sherman (born 1954) used photography to challenge images in popular culture and the mass media. Her work concentrated on examining the way women are viewed by society. She used herself as a model in the 1977-1980 series of 69 black-and-white photographs called "Untitled Film Stills." NEW YORK, NY - In 1979, Cindy Sherman rocked the NYC art world at age 26 with her “Film Stills.” The haunting photographic series appears to chronicle actresses in the midst of dramatic and evocative film scenes, but is in fact the artist herself posing as the different subjects. Hailed for her play on media and identity, the shy and reclusive Sherman almost always uses herself as the model in her photographs and always in disguise. Today, at age 54, she is internationally acknowledged as one of the world’s most gifted and significant visual talents - in May 1999, ARTnews named Sherman, alongside Matisse and Picasso, as one of 'The 20th Century’s Most Influential Artists.'"

now on the other side of the feminist spectrum....I learned about these girls in my contemporary art history class last night - THE GUERILLA GIRLS. so sick
